sound

sound is one of the most important elements of film. in most student productions sound is often forgotten about or left till the end. the sound of a film can be the make or break especially when distinguishing between student films and ‘proper’ films. sound in a film can tell the audience what is coming or give them hints to it. a subtle cut to silence in a horror film for example hints to something shocking happening like a jump scare. i’ve seen on social media sites before where people take the shots of one film and add the sound of a completely different film over the top. this is proof of how importnat sound is in film as it can completely change the mood and atmosphere of a film.

i think part of the reason i love sound so much is because of my involvement in music! it taught me a lot about how sound works and also how i can manipulate it. working on sound is so interesting because there are often so many different layers to it that contribute to the overall sound design.

during my time at university i’m looking forward to experimenting in as many ways as possible with sound. one of the ways i hope to do this is through foley sound. foley is (in the easiest way) really cool. i love getting to take different objects and make different sounds out of them to enhance a film. a lot of the projects that i’m working on at the moment rely quite heavily on sound so i’m very excited to share them with you when they’re done so i can show you what i can do!
